Rooflight replacement, non-fragile and in-plane

Old rooflights go brittle, discolour and become the single most dangerous thing on a roof. We replace domed, kerb mounted and in-plane rooflights on flat and profiled metal roofs with non-fragile units, as part of a roof refurbishment or as a standalone programme across an estate.

What is included

Every rooflight replacement, specified and guaranteed

Non-fragile replacement

Fragile rooflights are a leading cause of falls from height. Replacement units are specified as non-fragile to ACR(M)001 Class B or better, and the replacement programme is usually the quickest way an estate can remove a known risk.

Domed and kerb mounted

Polycarbonate and glass rooflights on upstand kerbs for flat roofs, with opening, access and smoke vent options. Kerbs are rebuilt or replaced and the waterproofing is dressed up and over them as part of the same job.

In-plane GRP for metal roofs

On profiled sheet roofs the rooflights match the sheet profile and are fixed and sealed in the plane of the roof. Triple skin units improve the U-value markedly over the single skin sheets they normally replace.

Estate wide programmes

Phoenix Academy in Walsall, Thomas Wolsey School in Ipswich and Windmill Primary in Telford all had every rooflight replaced as part of their roofing projects. Standalone rooflight programmes across multi-site estates are equally common.

Questions

Asked and answered

Why replace rooflights that are not leaking?

Because age makes them fragile. Polycarbonate and GRP rooflights lose strength with UV exposure, and an old unit can fail under a person. Replacing them with non-fragile units removes a real fall risk and usually improves daylight and thermal performance at the same time.

Can rooflights be replaced without re-roofing?

Yes. Kerb mounted units on flat roofs and in-plane units on metal roofs can be replaced on their own, with the surrounding waterproofing or sheeting made good. If the roof itself is near the end of its life we will say so, because doing both together is cheaper.

What does non-fragile mean?

That the rooflight will withstand a person falling onto it, tested to the ACR(M)001 standard. Class B is the usual specification for commercial roofs. The classification is on the manufacturer data sheet and in our handover file.

Do you replace rooflights on occupied buildings?

Yes. The opening is protected and the replacement is normally done within the day, so the classroom, workshop or office below is only affected for a short period and is never left open overnight.

Can you improve daylight or add opening vents?

Yes. Larger units, clearer glazing, opening vents for natural ventilation and smoke ventilation units can all be designed in. On schools it is a common way to improve the classroom environment while the roof is being done.
